History
The Southern Baptist Convention and the Virginia Conservative Baptist Convention helped local churches train and prepare members to serve as disaster relief workers. Training sessions were brought to the local churches and various areas of service were stressed, such as "mud out" "chain saw" "meals". Many of our church members volunteered and were trained for these services. As soon as the call came in,...they went.
Most Recently: April 24th, 2008 Tornado
A tornado struck the Suffolk and the Driver areas along Route 10 and north. A group from our church, as well as groups from First Baptist of Norfolk, and other local churches, took chain saws and other equipment to help their neighbors. They worked for over a week, helping residents in Suffolk and in Driver; cleaning up yards, moving tree limbs, giving encouragement to the folks affected by the disaster.
Mississippi 2004
Our first group to go were a mixture of genders, ages and experience. All went with a passionate desire to serve and to share the gospel message. So many "divine appointments" were experienced. So many people helped. And even the trip to and from Mississippi was filled with adventures. Each member of the team knew that God had blessed him or her!
Florida 2005
Again in the south, disaster, in the form of a hurricane, hit Florida. A team, made up of different members- but with the same leaders- headed south again. They combined their equipment and skills with other sister Baptist Churches to serve the victims in the south.
No'Eastern, Virginia 2006
Disaster hit close to home. A tropical storm moved up into Virginia bringing torrents of rain. Once the power was re-established, began the slow process of cleaning up.
